New Apartment, What Now?
Moving into a new apartment is exciting but there could be a lot of mixed feelings. You may start to question if you’re making the right decision or wonder, what now!? Rest assure that what ever you are feeling, you are not alone. A new apartment is a major responsibility and here are some simple but useful tips to help you navigate this process.
Inspect Every Inch
This seems quite obvious but it is important to ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck. If you notice chipped paint or a poorly installed appliance, report it as soon as possible to the property manager or building maintenance. Although, major issues should be reported prior to lease signing there may be missed issues that you discover after moving in. You will be living in this space for 12 months, it’s important that you are comfortable.
Make a List
Pen and paper or on your phone. Whichever is your vice, use it! You may be tasked with many responsibilities to complete before moving to a new apartment, be sure to make a list. Make several lists if you have to.Your list can include the utilities to put in your name prior to moving, your needed house appliances, bedding, toiletries, groceries, furniture and/or storage accommodations. The list can change and adjust as you get settled. But it remains a good source for helping you stay on track.
Focus on the Essential
You’ve made your inspections and your lists. Now, focus on the essentials. Make a budget to help prioritize what is important and what can be purchased now. Do not overwhelm yourself with trying to purchase everything at once. As you prepare to make the purchase consider if the items are essential to your everyday living. Ask yourself, is this purchase a need or a want? Do I have the budget to purchase this now or can it wait?
Allow Yourself Time
Making your apartment cozy or getting it just right will take some time. Do not rush the process, allow yourself time to settle in. Everything will slowly start coming together.
